When you have to extend the hardware like computers and laptops for your small businesses, in the past, you had to invest in buying the technology. But not any more!
So said Petrie van Zyl, CEO of Dial-A-Nerd, on a recent DigiBiz Webinar. He explained that small businesses can use new technology to grow, without breaking the bank by tapping into the offering of Hardware as a Service (HaaS), which is very similar to the already well-established offering of Software as a Service (SaaS).
Van Zyl highlighted the increasing importance of technology in today’s business environment. He emphasised that it’s nearly impossible to run a business without fundamental tech solutions, like email, payment platforms, and accounting software. These tools have evolved from “nice-to-have” features to essential components for any business.
“Keeping pace with this rapid technological change can be a challenge for small businesses,” he said. “New solutions emerge constantly, and businesses often lack the resources or knowledge to fully benefit from them. Scaling a business and financing ever-growing technology needs can be daunting!”
Traditionally, acquiring business technology required a significant upfront financial investment, called Capex (Capital Expenditure), but this is now being replaced by hardware being offered as a “service”, making the technology spend Opex (Operational Expenditure).
“Fortunately, technological advancements have made business solutions more accessible and affordable,” he said. “Cloud-based subscription services have revolutionised the way businesses access technology, which eliminates the need for expensive upfront hardware and software purchases.”
Van Zyl highlighted several popular cloud-based solutions, including Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Sage, and AWS. These services provide features that were once out of reach for small businesses, all delivered on a pay-as-you-go model that is much easier to manage on a limited budget. Now the same is being offered for hardware needs, bringing the newest technology within the reach of small businesses.
The Advantages of HaaS solutions include:
- Reduced upfront costs: Eliminates the need for large upfront capital expenditures.
- Scalability: Businesses can easily adjust their service plans up or down as their needs change.
- Maintenance free: The cloud service provider is responsible for maintaining the infrastructure and software.
- Accessibility: Cloud-based solutions allow access from any device with an internet connection.
By leveraging affordable HaaS solutions, small businesses can access powerful technologies that were once out of reach. This allows them to compete on a more level playing field and unlock new growth opportunities.
